Easter At Grandma's House

One of my fondest memories at Grandma's House is Easter.  We lived in Cleveland, Ohio when I was a tot, and came home to grandma's for holidays.  We always looked forward to Easter.  We had our pretty little frilly dresses and hats, pocket books and nylon socks with very colorful shoes.  We could not wait to get all dressed up and go to Sunday School at the little church up the road from grandma's house.  That is the very church my husband and I attend today!  We would have a big dinner after Sunday School, and a big Easter egg hunt.  But all the preparations began the day before Easter Sunday.

Our moms would buy dozens of eggs for us to color, and that was quite a production.  There were four of us, me, my sister Betty, my cousins Martha and Edward, and then about 10 years later, Pamela came along.  We were quite a handful.  Needless to say, we enjoyed the egg coloring.  We colored eggs, the table, the floor, and of course, each other!  We had the most unusual and beautiful eggs in the County, I am sure!

The Easter Bunny always came on Easter Sunday Eve and left us an Easter basket filled with all sorts of goodies.  We must have been good kids because we got such nice baskets!  Of course we shared our goodies with everyone.  Aunt Fern, my mom's oldest sister, always made home made candy, molded no less, and made a huge Easter basket for the family.  I have never seen so many kinds of candy, or tasted so many.  They were all delicious.  We always ended up with belly aches and it was no wonder!

We always made family pictures.  We were either standing in the living room or standing in the drive way in front of our car.  I guess those were the best poses!  We looked so cute and happy in our little Easter outfits, and mom and dad looked like they were just glad it was almost over with.  All us kids would sit on the steps out front of the house and get our pictures made, squinting our little eyes in the sun!  How cute we were then!

I can remember one specific Easter Sunday.  I had the most beautiful pink leather shoes I have ever seen.  They were my treasures for sure.  I even had a little pocket book to match.  I was so proud of them.  Well, as we had no indoor plumbing, my sister accompanied me to the outdoor facility.  I still don't know what happened, but something surely did, because I came back to the house screaming and crying, and only one of my beautiful pink shoes.  The other one was left behind in the outdoor facility, unreachable by human hands!  Mom was not happy with her girls that day!

At the end of the day, after our baths and night clothes were on, we got to go out on the front porch and sit in the swing.  We could hear the tree frogs and night sounds.  It was the best part of any day at grandma's house.

I am truly blessed to have been a part of this loving family, and learning the meaning of being a part of a Christian family.  We learned Jesus was crucified and rose on the third day to save us from our sins, and we taught our children the same thing on their Easter Sundays.  God has blessed me in my life and I honor Him in all things He has done for me.

I hope you enjoyed going down memory lane with me, and please come back for more journeys back to my family's great times at Grandma's House.
