OUR CHRISTMAS TREE

At this time of year, as our Christmas tree is going up, I think back about being a child and the day arriving that we decorated the family Christmas tree.  Oh what a time we had.  We waited all day for daddy to come home from work so we could eat supper and then go pick out the perfect tree for our house.

Now, we had a small house, and mommy and daddy always kept us focused on the size of the tree we needed.   Of course the final decision was not ours!  We arrived at the Christmas tree lot and could hardly wait to get out of the car and start looking for our Christmas tree.  We looked at them all, that was the rule.  We could not pick one until all had been viewed.  Of course we loved them all, and finally decided on about three trees.

Mommy picked out the one she thought was perfect.  We liked her tree also.  Daddy picked out a different one, liking it best.  Mommy said it was too big for our living room, but daddy was not swayed in his decision.  This is the one for us this year he pronounced.  Mommy rolled her eyes and, we took the tree home.

It was freezing cold outside, being December!  We brought in the tree and placed it in the tree holder.  Mommy said we needed to let the tree warm up through the night in the house before we decorated it.  We went to bed with visions of our beautiful tree decorated and lights shining bright.

When we woke up the next morning we could not believe our eyes!  The beautiful tree we had placed in our living room last night had grown!  It filled the entire half of the living room that it was placed in.  We screamed with excitement!  Mommy and daddy were not so excited.  It seems that as the tree warmed up, it also expanded to its true size, which was way to big for our little living room!  Mommy looked at daddy and said, make it fit Max!  This is not going to work!  We got so worried that mommy would make daddy take the tree out of the house and we would not have a tree.

Daddy could not take the tree out,  it was to big.  He proceeded to cut off limbs and shorten the trunk, because it was taller than the height of the ceiling.  Mommy said that still isn't enough.  Well, daddy worked for several hours getting that tree to where it would fit our little living room and mommy gave her consent that it would work.  We intently watched the whole process, never seeing a Christmas tree butchered before!  The outcome was a much smaller tree, but it did fit our living room.  We could finally decorate it!

We worked on placing the ornaments and lights on, and put the roping around the tree, and finally icicles, the silver ones that sparkled and reflected the lights!  It was a beautiful Christmas tree, maybe the prettiest we had ever had.  It is certainly the one I always remember when it is time to put up the Christmas tree for my family.
